The former dual code rugby international joins Owain Gwynedd Griffith for a look back at his career.

He played as a back row forward for Wales, where he won ten caps between 1987 and 1990. He also played rugby union for Neath RFC before moving to rugby league, playing second-row for Warrington Wolves and Workington Town R.L.F.C.

He also played for the Wales and Great Britain national rugby league teams.

In 2003 he took over as coach of Neath RFC from Lyn Jones. Due to his success at the club he is regarded as a local hero, leading Neath RFC to four Premiership titles in successive years and three cup final wins. He joined new Italian rugby team AIRONI RUGBY, originally as a defence coach, a position he previously filled with the Ospreys Rugby and Wales.

He became Head Coach on 7 November 2010 after Franco Bernini was sacked after not winning any of their games up to that point. In July 2012 Phillips was appointed head coach of Italian club Rugby Viadana 1970, before stints with London Welsh, Neath and more recently has Head Coach of Wales Women.

Now performing as the Chief Archer in Cirque Soleil, KA production in Vegas, Barri Griffiths, better known as Mason Ryan in wrestling circles, had 4 year spell as a Superstar with the WWE.

He looks back at the time he made his debut on ‘Monday Night RAW’ with CM Punk and the New Nexus and how he then got invited to John Cena’s tour bus for a few too many drinks. He also recalls when he met his doppelgänger John Bautista and even Ray Mysterio was confused.Mason Ryan had some memorable bouts on ‘pay per view’ Survivor Series and Royal Ruble with Booker T.

He reflects on the influence that mentor and promoter Orig Williams had on him as a person and career, his time with ITV's Gladiators and so much more.

No need to say that the Scarlets, Wales and Warren Gatland come up in the conversation along with sharing some of his early memories of moving down to South Wales from up North in order to progress hi rugby career. 

With five Six Nations championship to his name as a player and coach, the North Walian will certainly have a lot to contibute to one of the greatest rugby organisations in the world.

It was interesting to hear about the working relationship that the Irishmen and the Crusaders in New Zealand have.

Ash Dykes is an explorer, extreme athlete, motivational speaker and three times World First Record Holder. 

 

Owain Gwynedd chats to the Welshmen about his amazing career in this podcast / videocast for 218 Events. 

 

Ash recently head-lined global news by becoming the first person to hike the entire length of the Yangtze River in China. A 4,000-mile journey that took him 352 days to complete, he faced bears, altitude, wolves, landslides, blizzards and had to send 10 of the 16 team members (that joined him for short stints at different locations) home, due to altitude sickness, fear of wildlife and/or injury.

His previous two expeditions lead to the other World Records. In 2016, Ash achieved his second world record by becoming the first person to walk the entire length of Madagascar’s interior


In 2014, Ash became the first ever recorded person to hike across Mongolia solo and unsupported, covering over 1,500 miles in 78 days.

New Canterbury Crusaders Assistant Coach, Mark Jones, discusses his appointment to the "greatest rugby organisation in the world” with Owain Gwynedd of 218 Events.

The former Wales wing joined the Super Rugby outfit back in January on a two year deal - the announcement caught many pundits by surprise.

In this podcast / videocast - Mark discusses how the opportunity came about, lack of opportunity in Wales, the difference between Northern and Hemisphere Rugby and who has caught his eye in the Christchurch based side… however Wales, the Scarlets and RGC are far from forgotten.
