13th March 2020. The eve of Wales’ final game of the Six Nations tournament against Scotland. A day that I won’t forget in a hurry.
The preparation for our matchday hospitality event was well underway at Cardiff’s Jurys Inn. Geraint and I had been setting up at the venue, with the intention of putting the final touches on Friday (which usually consists of me arranging the Daffodils and blowing up the balloons).
There had been speculation surrounding the game and if it would go ahead or not as more and more cases of COVID-19 were reported. At our event, we were to be joined by Scarlets, Wales and Lions legend Phil Bennett - one of the best hospitality speakers in the business. When the WRU announced it was ‘game on’ on Friday morning - we were relieved and excited to say the least.
By 14:05 on Friday afternoon, the news broke and the game was off! And so was our event. Imagine my predicament - I was presenting S4C’s daily afternoon magazine Prynhawn Da - we had just gone ‘on air’ at 14:00. The producer whispers in to my ear… “Wales v Scotland tomorrow is off… announce it to the audience”. My jaw nearly dropped to the floor. I’m not sure who exactly spoke next, me or my co-presenter, I assume she did, as probably the words coming out of my mouth wouldn’t have made any sense. I had the visions of my phone ringing repeatedly. What had just happened, what were we going to do and thanks a bunch WRU were my thoughts. For the next hour, there was nothing I could do.
Fast forward six months. Who could have foreseen how life would change so suddenly and how the hospitality, events and entertainment industries would be so badly affected, like so many others.
It’s taken a long time for things to settle – and we’re adjusting every day like everyone else, and most importantly, at 218 Events we’re looking forward to the future.
May I take the opportunity to thank everyone for your patience. We really have appreciated all of your support. I hope you’re all keeping safe and well during what has been an incredible rollercoaster of a year.
