The 218 Podcast

In our last blog we mentioned that taking time away from event planning has given us an opportunity to experiment with other avenues, such as podcasts. Now knowing that the second COVID wave has arrived, and that the hospitality & events industry will remain on hold… we have been re-energised to continue the ‘218 podcast’ for the foreseeable future. Who knows if we’ll be able to entertain guests in early 2021?! England & Ireland head to Cardiff for the Six Nations in February. We can vividly remember the buzz in Wales’ capital, as Warren Gatland’s men battled it out for the Grand Slam in 2019. We were celebrating until the early hours of the morning at the Jury’s Hotel, with Ian Gough in toe, following victory over Irish on the final day. Those days already feel so long ago!

It’s been a time where we’ve not been able to meet our heroes face to face, but our interest and desire to get to know our sporting idols remains undiminished. They’ve continued to perform or coach at the highest level, whilst the old normal has vanished around them. So we’ve followed some of their stories.

Some would say I’ve developed am man crush on two of those personalities, UFC fighter Brett Johns and adventurer Ash Dykes. I may even add Darren Campbell to the list too. What a story Darren has to share. From rags to riches, Whilst previewing his biography ‘Track Record: Darren Campbell’, he talks openly about what he has achieved during his sprinting and business career. Olympic and European golds, coaching rugby and football stars, such as Jonah Lomu and Andre Shevchenko how to sprint ,and how he nearly represented Wales in the Commonwealth Games.

On the flip side, life hasn't been plain sailing for the Moss Side boy. Being a part of a gang in Manchester and the murder of a friend motivated his move to South Wales. Suffering from depression following a car crash early in his career and a near death experience in 2018 have all been battles he has overcome. For me, it’s probably one of my favourite 218 podcasts… I learnt so much about a world sprinting star and, like all the others on our pods, such a humble and likeable guy! A special thank you to Trystan Bevan, the former Cardiff Blues and Wasps fitness coach who co-wrote the biography, for arranging Darren to contribute to our series.

Brett who was preparing for his Fight Island contest with Montel Jackson. A fight which he once again had to win. Having never met him before, I felt I was his best mate by the end of the recording session, that’s how nice a guy he is. He was open and honest and prepared to talk about anything I wanted. Saying that, I would never mess with him… he must have one massive mean streak to do what he does. He went on to beat Jackson in his fight a week later in Abu Dhabi.

A hospitality event in South Wales with Brett is a must in the future!

And what about Ash Dykes? Some of you may be asking who he is as he’s not a household name… yet!!! With three World Firsts to his name and sharing an agent with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson agent, the North Walian is soon to be known worldwide. He’s the first to walk the length of the Yangtze River, China. It took him nearly a year. He was the first to walk across Mongolia and the first to walk across Madagascar whilst summating the eight highest peaks. In all three adventures, he nearly died. The man’s motivation and drive is unparalleled.

Those are just three of the podcasts that 218 Events have recorded in the last 6 months. As one door closes temporarily, another opens. If you haven’t watched the 218 podcast the links to each one can be found below. We’ll continue to make these in the future… on your laptops, mobiles or tablets in the comfort of your own homes!

Saying that, I don’t think anything will ever beat being in a room with a great sporting legend. Let’s hope we can welcome a few of our podcast contributors to one of our hospitality events in South Wales in 2021. We’ll be back soon offering you the best seats in our house… watch this space!
